The great man is 60 years old yet his blood is shiny new. I received my 2 disc edition copy in the mail a few weeks ago and have to say its condition was superb, despite the actual cardboard box it arrived in being slightly mistreated, but I live in South Africa and the dear box had much traveling to do, so this is understandable. As for the music itself, there can be no denying it, it was superb. Clear, defined, crisp, deep and in most cases excruciatingly beautiful. I had heard all the songs, with the exception of the strange ambient noise of track 13, on Peter Gabriel's website, [...], so I knew what I was getting. However, when you first see the packaging, smell the inside of the CD case, the small booklet and just stare, almost blindly, at the presentation, it all comes to light. Something special is upon us. Peter has always believed in this sort of thing. Opening each new CD is like a small moment and something to absorb and savour. This was no different. The front cover has to be one of the most beautiful on any PG album, along with the cover for US and Scratch My Back, and it definitely makes sense in this regard. It seems Peter really enjoys black these days.I will not make this review long so I'll note key points. Highlights on the album were the stunning "Downside Up", the instrumental "San Jacinto" (because it is a couple of seconds longer than the sung version, but that version is awesome too), the vibrant "Red Rain", the very eerie and scary "Intruder", and, arguably the best song on the album, the gorgeous "Wallflower". If there was one song on this album I didn't really catch onto well, it would have to be "Digging In The Dirt". This is because I really enjoyed the US version and the subsequent, increasingly violent live performances that followed in the ten or so years after. The live version of this song though, on New Blood Live In London, was much better. I've always preferred Digging In The Dirt's physical appearance on stage.Overall, Peter has once again shown what kind of musical palette he has, as well as the skills and importantly, the trust he has in his arrangers and musicians, in this case many many of them. The result is something stunningly beautiful and surely unforgettable. The old classics, and unknown gems, given new blood, and boy, is it flowing like a wild river.Mersi bokou Peter Gabriel. Mersi.
