I didn’t know Ward could make such a sweet read. Both Saxton/Ruhn’s and Peyton/Novo’s stories were incredibly heartfelt, and though both couples struggled with different issues and drama, they followed a similar pacing—as if the stories mirrored each other. This made the final chapter very satisfying as everything was explained and feelings were exposed and happiness surrounded the four main characters. The book as a whole was incredibly well-rounded.I can’t say which couple I liked more. At first Ruhn and Saxton were my favorites because I’d been waiting for Saxton to have a happy ending since things ended with Blay and also because Ruhn turned out to be a big surprise—a good one. He had the perfect balance of innocence, deep-set pain, and masculinity; all of which gave me the feels and interested me at the same time. However, Peyton and Novo grew on me if for no other reason than because of how developed their characters were. Both of them changed so much over the course of their story, but their changes were realistic as it seemed to take a lot of time and struggling for them to become better individuals. They also had amazing chemistry and had some of the best dialogue I’ve read from Ward in a long time. Peyton was hilarious!The only major downside to this book was the slow plot. I personally didn’t mind it, but others might be disappointed by the lack of action and angst. Otherwise, I believe this is the best book I’ve read from Ward in a LONG time. The emotions were so sincere, the steamy scenes were decent, and most importantly, I felt like I was reading about vampires again. All of Ward’s signature vampire traits were emphasized in this book—bonding, fangs, blood, mating... It was all hot and exciting and made me feel like I was reading one of her original BDB books again. So good. Soooo good.
