This edition of the benchmark text is more a complete revitalization than a revision: over 75% of the text and 80% of the references are new. Clearly written and abundantly illustrated, it presents the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and management of all hematologic disorders. It follows a logical organization from definition to treatment, and descriptions are written in language common to both clinical and basic science, making it as accessible to the general internist as to the specialist.
This is a solid textbook for hematologists. The first edition of this book was used by the hematopathologists, hematology residents and fellows, and clinical lab scientists at LAC/USC until it started falling apart. Other texts were bought but Jandl's book was still a favorite. I missed that book, both it's great depth of information and it's clear style, so I got the 2nd ed. even though I am now retired and will probably never work in a lab again.Flow cytometry was still in its beginning stages when this edition was written, but Jandl gives a nice table of cell markers such as CD2, CD4, CD8, etc., which can be used to develop a strategy for identifying leukemias and lymphomas and many other diseases, HIV/AIDS, multiple myeloma, etc.Huge references fill several pages at the end of each chapter for those who need them.
