BLOOD MOUNTAIN is another concept album following LEVIATHAN, this time an epic quest on a mountain. From water to earth... Scott Kelly of Neurosis makes another guest appearance, this time on the second song, "Crystal Skull." This time Josh Homme also appears, on "Colony of Birchmen." Paul Romano once again provides the superb art work.I consider LEVIATHAN and BLOOD MOUNTAIN to be Mastodon's two best albums. This one takes the basic sound of LEVIATHAN and elaborates it into a more progressive and psychedelic dimension. I can understand why some consider LEVIATHAN to be stronger, but I think the prog additions work phenomenally well.After this one the number of people was rapidly growing who saw Mastodon as one of the most important new metal bands, forging a new mainstream for the new millennium. Both Brann Dailor's drumming and the guitar playing of Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher are technically excellent. The vocals are the band's weakest spot, but Brent Hinds and Troy Sanders are not bad singers, they're just not as distinctive or amazing as the percussion and guitar.If you're just checking out the band, this is definitely one to hear, along with LEVIATHAN.
